Ethnic Dance, making his first start in open company, graduated by a front-running 6 3/4 lengths in his sixth try and second turf appearance while facing state-bred foes at Hollywood Park July 14. He returned with a 1 3/4-length optional claiming victory over the Del Mar turf course Aug. 3. The dark bay colt stumbled at the break, but recovered quickly and rushed out to the early lead. Ethnic Dance skipped along on
the front end through fractions of :49.45 and 1:13.80. He turned back Den's Legacy at midstretch and strode home a confident winner. Infinite Magic closed late for
second. Ethnic Dance survived a stewards= inquiry into the stretch run in which the winner appeared to drift out slightly into the path of Den=s Legacy. The fractions looked favorable, commented winning trainer John Sadler. It didn't look like there was a lot of speed when I was handicapping the race, so I told Edwin [Maldonado] I would be very happy if he was out in front or sitting second on a slow pace. He rode a good
race. He really kept him relaxed and this is an improving horse. Maldonado added, When we hit the half-mile pole, I knew I was on the horse to beat. Everytime one
of them would inch up to him, he'd let out a notch; all on his own. He's a nice horse and he's very game.

Beyond 02 Equine Alkaline Water SystemLady of Shamrock caboosed the field behind a slow pace and was in the midst of what appeared to be a winning rally in deep stretch when she was impeded badly by Viva Carina. The heavy favorite crossed the line second, but was quite justifiably awarded the GII Santa Barbara S. courtesy of the stewards. Lady of Shamrock emerged as the leader of her generation on the West Coast turf circuit last season
with wins in the GIII Providencia S. in April, the GI American Oaks in July and the GI Del Mar Oaks the following month.

The dark bay gave a very good account of herself in her first try against older horses in the GI Breeders= Cup Filly and Mare Turf Nov. 2, coming from last in the field
to finish fifth, just 2 1/2 lengths behind the victorious Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune). She got a well-deserved respite thereafter and resumed with a running-on second following a slow start in the nine-furlong GII Santa Ana S. over this course Mar. 24.
Lady of Shamrock and Rafael Bejarano were content to trail through the stretch and onto the backside, but was going to have work to do, as Viva Carina and The Only
Key (GB) (Key of Luck) slowed things down up front. The cadence quickened a bit after six furlongs in a pedestrian 1:14.41, and Bejarano was getting busy on Lady of
Shamrock, guiding
her into contention with a solid run up the fence. Viva Carina was still traveling well and carried a clear advantage into the stretch, but Lady of Shamrock was closing with menacing strides at the wood. The pacesetter drifted in under a right-handed stick from Victor Espinoza in the final furlong, causing Lady of Shamrock to lose all momentum, and the stewards were left with no choice but to act. AI don=t think he [Espinoza] knew I was there," said Bejarano, who could have angled out, but gambled inside. AI tried to come running but I also wasn't screaming and [I] didn=t let him know. He was surprised, it wasn=t his fault. His filly just kept coming in. I tried to sneak through thereYWhen I saw the opportunity on the rail in the stretch and I saw a lot of room, I just kept running but unfortunately when Victor used the
right-hand stick, his horse kept coming in and completely crossed my lane."

After spending the early part of her career in Louisiana, I Dazzle was transferred to trainer Jack Van Berg in Southern California last summer. She tested graded stakes company and performed respectfully against some top-class fillies, and finally recorded her first victory on the California circuit last out, taking a non-winners of two over this strip Feb. 23. Sent off at 9-2 in her first try for trainer John Sadler, I Dazzle sat in third off the rail through the early stages. Putting in a bid rounding the
turn, she grabbed the lead at the top of the lane and appeared full of run, but had to bring her >A= game to defeat her tenacious stablemate Moone=s My Name, who nearly nailed the winner on the wire. Byrony completed a 1-2-3 finish for Sadler. Jockey Rafael Bejarano said: AI could see that Gary Stevens [on the front-running Little Emily (Castledale {Ire})] was going pretty quick and I
wanted to keep my horse relaxed. I could see Stevens open up around the turn and when I asked my horse, she gave me a good kick.

Update: On 8/11/12 Lady of Shamrock wins Grade I Del Mar Oaks

Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy) left no doubt as to who the best turf filly on the West Coast is after a facile last-to-first victory under Mike Smith in the GI Del Mar Oaks. It was Lady of Shamrock's fourth win in her last five starts. Winner of the China Doll S. at Santa Anita Mar. 10, she added her first graded win in the nine-furlong GIII Providencia S. Apr. 7. She was the 1-2 choice when nosed out by My Gi Gi (E Dubai) in the GII Honeymoon H. at Betfair Hollywood Park June 9, but got back on track in a big way when she slipped up the rail to annex the GI American Oaks July 14. The crowd's choice sat last as Best Present Ever (Unusual Heat) and second choice Eden's Moon (Malibu Moon) took the field through :23.67 and :47.12 fractions. Longshot Open Water swept to a narrow lead at the quarter pole, but Smith and Lady of Shamrock were just kicking into gear while widest of all, and when the dark bay leveled out at the 3/16ths pole, the outcome was never in doubt as she cruised home a confident winner. Rank outsider Stormy Lucy kept the winner honest while never threatening in second. "We got a little pace, but when you're even money and you're running from the back, it's always a little gut-wrenching," admitted trainer John Sadler. "I saw :23, :47, I was feeling good. The last time she closed into a :50 half. Very nice ride. A little wide, but when you're on the best horse you don't want to get in trouble. We thought she was the best horse, and she lived up to the billing today." Sadler said connections were considering the GI Rodeo Drive S. (formerly the Yellow Ribbon) at Santa Anita Sept. 29 or the GI Queen Elizabeth II S. at Keeneland Oct. 13. "She's very good at Santa Anita, so we'll probably be leaning on staying home," said Sadler.
